Interviewing a Glitz Girl!

By Ginger John

Interviewer: Is everyone as crazy about the Roller Doodles as my customers?

Ginger John: Absolutely! I love the Roller Doodles and sales indicate that most people who run into them love them just as much as the two of us!

Interviewer: What happened to the Glitz Netz? I miss it!

Ginger John: It's not in our current stock, but we're working on it! I'll keep you posted!

Interviewer: How did the three of you Glitz Girls meet? What made you and Laura and Erin go for it and start Glitz Designs?

Ginger John: Laura lives less than a mile from me and Erin is an old friend of her's. So the most basic answer is that Laura brought the three of us together and it just seemed to work out. We all wanted to do something and we discovered that together...we could do it!

Interviewer: How do the Glitz "husbands" fit into the picture? Are they supportive?

Ginger John: I think all three of them saw it initially as a little hobby or pet project, but at this point all three of them are attending shows, offering to share their business expertise and basically being really sweet, proud and (most of the time) helpful!

Interviewer: Do the three of you get together just to scrapbook?

Ginger John: That's funny you asked that. We just got together this morning. We were working on a really cool, giant, 18x18, Acrylic clock sample. I'm not sure if it's top secret or not, but since it's for a proposed class, I guess not! We don't get together to scrapbook and create as much as we'd like to since the business side of the company is pretty demanding on our time. (And we do email each other about a million and one times each day).

Interviewer: So tell me...what do the Glitz eat when they scrapbook? What do they wear?

Ginger John: I go for Dr. Pepper. Laura and Erin go for chocolate. And all three of us live in our blue jeans and T-shirts.

Interviewer: Any advice for anyone that has never scrapbooked digitally?

Ginger John: If I could say anything...I'd say, "Just try it!" It's intimidating to start out, but it's so fun once you get over that hump. I started out a couple years ago knowing next to nothing about Photoshop. I took a couple Jessica Sprague tutorials to help me get started and now I've switched over almost completely! It's just so amazing to me that I can have all my scrapbook supplies on CD's and when I create layouts they just go nicely into a little folder titled "PRINT". Then I can print them on my wide format printer or order them from Costco or Shutterfly. I will say that using the Create A Cart CD is a really good way to get started on digital. For some reason it's not quite as intimidating to make a card as it is to make a full layout.

Interviewer: What's your favorite Glitz line to play with?

Ginger John: I really got attached to the Rhapsody line. That peacock was unbelievably usable!

Interviewer: Share with me...one thing you think every scrapbooker ought to know.

Ginger John: Well, this might be random, but the first thing that comes to mind is that what really matters when you look back on a layout is whether or not it tells a story. It can't just look pretty. It should make you cry or smile, or maybe bust out laughing.

Interviewer: What's your favorite part about being a part of Glitz Design?

Ginger John: The shows! Heading out to the CHA shows is just exciting. It's fun to meet all the great people who work in this industry and to stare in awe at the massive amount of creativity gathered all in one spot.

Interviewer: What's the hardest thing you've come up against starting Glitz Design?

Ginger John: The hardest thing I think for myself and Laura and Erin would be the daily struggle of owing and running a growing company and still working at being a good mom and wife to our families.

Interviewer: The Glitz Design website is a fun place if you're a woman. Is it everything you imagined when you started the process?

Ginger John: I actually do love the way the website turned out. I think it's fun and fulfills its purpose at the same time which is what we were aiming for from the start. We continually have new ideas so STAYING satisfied with the website sometimes seems difficult, but as a whole I think it turned out wonderfully.

Interviewer: Is there anyone in the scrapbooking industry that you admire?

Ginger John: That's always such a hard question! There are so many people in this industry to admire! There are the designers that are traveling here, there and everywhere! There are the retailers that are working day in and day out keeping the industry alive. There are the Scrapbookers that are non-stop creative and always demanding more fun and exciting products. The whole hobby as a whole amazes me! The creativity I see on a daily basis is what makes my job as a "Glitz Girl" so fun!

Interviewer: What's your preference? Chocolate or candy?

Ginger John: I usually avoid such difficult choices...both, but if I must I guess I'll choose chocolate!

Interviewer: Diet or regular?

Ginger John: No diet for me...I prefer mine loaded!

Interviewer: What inspires you?

Ginger John: When I see other people being creative it makes my juices start to flow. Or when I go shopping. Or when I watch TV sometimes...Could my answer be that it depends on my mood?

Interviewer: Do you have a favorite movie?

Ginger John: Willow. You might think I'm nuts now, but it's something that I held on to from my childhood. My brothers and sisters and I used to watch it a lot and anytime I need some background noise...I lean towards Willow!

Interviewer: What do you aim for when you create layouts?

Ginger John: I want them to see the story behind the picture! First and foremost I want my children to be able to look at it and basically use it as a journal for our lives; something they can look back on in the years to come!

Interviewer: Is there a scrapbooking rule you like to follow?

Ginger: Well...obviously I like to tell a story with my scrapping. And that means journaling and LOTS of it!

Interviewer: What is one thing you would tell someone who has dreams of doing what you have done?

Ginger John: Don't worry if it's hard; it's supposed to be! Good luck!
