Voip Providers & LCRs Challenge BT's Price Hikes

By Darren Borne

As the 'credit crunch' strikes down even more corporate victims & consumer spending hits an all time low, outlook looks bleak for many British businesses, except for British Telecom the UK largest communications company who has increased call setup fees, line rentals & call charges.

During September 08 BT line rentals were 12.23GBP for PSTN & 15.92GBP for ISDN. Whilst there are good deals available from LCR operators, the best deal appears to be 1.50 pcm per SIP or IAX channel with unlimited outbound lines on a 3 month contract to Gradwell.

BT ISDN2 connection charge has risen to 299GBP which is an increase of 25% to the same time last year. With 80 connection charge per channel on ISDN 30, BT paves the way for VOIP Telecom providers & LCRs many of whom offer free connection without lengthy tie-ins.

Many VOIP telephone providers & low cost routing operators charge a minimum call fee, this varies from as little as 1.5p with per second billing to 1 minute minimum fee. As from this month BT is charging 7p to connect for customers who have not to entered into any call plan agreement - an increase of 14% to the same time last year

UK landline to mobile minute rates to (07) numbers vary from 8p with LCR on long term contracts and high call spend to BT's 19p standard rate. Minute rates to national (01) (02) numbers vary from 0.8p on long term LCR contracts to BT's 4p standard rate. UK ITSPs typically charge 9p - 11p to mobiles & 1.25p -1.5p to landlines without any long contract obligations or spend commitments. Many Voip Providers are now offering all inclusive UK & international calls packages from 15 to 25 pcm.

Call plans such as BT 'Oneplan' offer 5p capped calls to landlines & 20p capped calls to mobiles. To qualify for this plan you will need 2 other BT services on a 2 year contract. A survey of 2 million calls carried out by Telecost suggests that the average call length to mobile is 110 seconds and an average call to landline is 112 seconds. This service is therefore more suitable to companies that make longer than average length calls.

In order to make serious savings on telecoms companies should insure that their phone systems are GSM ready. By integrating GSM gateways UK companies can achieve free office to staff mobile calls and 1.47p minute rate to any mobile network with a little development & negotiation.

To migrate your telecoms to VOIP ITSPs you will need the following:

- BT 21CN compliant telephone system

- access to low contended ADSL or SDSL services

- sufficient bandwidth to insure high quality calls

- ip telephones

- Good advice & careful provisioning from a trustworthy IP Telecoms specialist
