Barack Obama has not wasted time soaking in his win for presidency. Instead, he is quick to work at putting together some of his team. He has already chosen a Chief of Staff, a press secretary and a senior advisor.
Obama has yet to pick his Secretary of Health and Human Services person. A Bloomberg report is guessing it will be Tom Daschle, former Senate leader, or Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas.
The Bloomberg report also threw out Donna Shalala as a potential candidate, as well. Shalala was HHS Secretary under President Bill Clinton. It might not be a safe bet who Obama will choose, but it is a safe bet to think the new secretary won't have much in common with who currently holds the job.
Bush's Secretary, Mike Leavitt has opposed the SCHIP expansion. He supports Bush's policies but is also tried to improve the individual health insurance realm.
Obama's administration will have their work cut out for them when dealing with Bush's health care policies. A couple months ago Bush stated federal guidelines that make expansion of a state's SCHIP programs almost impossible.
Several states sued the White House over these rules. Whoever the new Secretary of Health and Human Services will be, expect him or her to have multiple differences in policy with Mike Leavitt.
