Your Kitchen and Healthy Weight Loss

By Herb B. Lewis

Healthy weight loss is not difficult if you start with your kitchen. Your kitchen can be your friend or your worst foe. You will be much better off if you make sure the foods you keep in your kitchen are good for you. Healthy weight loss is much harder when you have sweets you crave and fattening food every time you go into your kitchen. Make it easier on yourself by cleaning out that kitchen. The best place to start is your fridge, have a look around, all kinds of things can hid in your fridge. Stick your head in and look around. Throw out the ice cream and anything else you know needs to be thrown out.

At first it can be hard to sort out what is healthy and what is not. Get into the habit of reading the labels on everything you eat. Every day you hear nutrition information and advertisements for foods that clam to be good for you. Sorting through all this information can be a bit much. Some products are healthy, but others may be lacking in nutrients or have too much added fat, salt, sugar or even Mono Sodium Glutamate. My advice is to keep it simple, avoid processed foods, eat fresh foods that are easy to fix. Do not neglect the back of the cupboards and other hiding places. Take a good look, at the ingredients of your food. Is the food you have in your kitchen good for you? If not, you need to throw it away and buy food that is good for you. Throw out the white bread, white sugar, sweeteners, soft drinks, junk foods, processed foods, margarine, and soft drinks.

Look at your cans of soup. If your soap has more than a gram of salt per serving, that is too much. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure. Most people only need about two grams of salt a day. Choose lower sodium soups or make homemade soup and go light on the salt.

Some soups have Mono Sodium Glutamate added, throw it out now. Get it out of you kitchen. MSG is used as a flavor enhancer; if you need a flavor enhancer to make you food taste good then you need to eat different food. MSG is often found in Chinese restaurants, and many of the processed food in your local super market.

Make sure you have a variety of fruits and vegetables that are easy to get to when you get cravings. Lightly salted or no salt nuts are great for snacks, in moderation if you want to lose weight. You need good protein and it is better to have healthy proteins around so you will not get deprived and go on a binge. The important thing is to stay within your targeted caloric intake.

Pasta goes well with many sauces and is easy to fix. Enriched white flour pasta is not good for you. It goes straight to the hips. Pasta made from whole wheat is more nutritious and is much better for keeping your blood sugar level.

Look at the types of fat in your kitchen. Fat is an important part of your diet; you need fat to stay alive. Fats are not created equal. Some fats support our health while other fats increase our risks of heart disease. Swap the bad fats with good fats in your kitchen.

Polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats are good for you, when eaten in moderation. Most foods are made of a blend of fats. Polyunsaturated fat can be found in olive oil, soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, fatty fish and some nuts and seeds such as walnuts and sunflower seeds.

Saturated fats and trans fats can raise cholesterol. I personally stay away from margarine. I like to cook with ghee and olive oil. Ghee is a clarified butter without any solid milk particles or water. Ghee adds aroma, flavor and taste to the food. Ghee is great for people who are on low fat diet because a small amount of ghee adds a lot of flavor.

To make ghee melt 5 lbs. of butter in a thick bottom pot and boil on a medium flame. Melt the butter gradually to let the impurities separate. Cook 30-40 minutes. Don't stir or you will burn the butter; just boil. When bubbles appear on surface and the butter has turned amber color, it is done. Immediately after it separates, strain through cheese cloth. This should give you over 1/2 gallon of ghee.

Olive oil has a high content of monounsaturated fats. Olive oil is a main element of the Mediterranean Diet. As a fat for cooking it's one of the best. Olives are a fruit; olive oil is a fruit juice. Apple juice will go bad fast if you leave it sitting out on the counter, same thing with olive oil. Olive oil should be stored in a cool place in a dark airtight container. Refrigeration will extend the life of your olive oil, it may turn cloudy, just warm it up and it will be good.

Always buy a good olive oil, if it does not taste good to you or of it leaves an aftertaste find a better brand. Extra-virgin olive oil is the highest quality oil, least processed, comprising the oil from the first pressing of the olives.

To help make your healthy weight loss a success, take a look at what's in your kitchen. What you see could be the thing that is keeping you from reaching your weight loss goals. Take inventory and clean out those foods that are not part of your healthy weight loss program.
