12 Tazer Rules you Ignore at your Peril

By Jennifer Bales

1) Store your taser as your would any other weapon, in a location locked away from children. Insure that your taser is never stored "loaded". If you decide to carry your taser in your purse or briefcase, ensure it is hidden so children will never find it. Always check local laws before bringing your taser outside of your home.

2) Never point your taser at a target you don't intend to fire on. A taser can be potentially lethal. An accidental discharge could lead to several nasty legal repercussions.

3) Fifteen feet is the maximum range of the tazers sold to citizens. In order to judge accurately, measure 15 feet with a tape measure and familiarize yourself with this distance. The ideal range to your target is 7-10 feet. If you fire from a closer range, the darts of the unit may not lodge far enough apart to have maximum effect.

4) A taser uses an electrical charge and that charge is fully capable of igniting flammable materials. Don't ever fire your taser near combustible or explosive substances.

5) Your taser is designed to make your target lose control of their motor functions and so if you fire a taser at someone in the water, or someone who could be seriously harmed by a fall, you are no longer using a non-lethal weapon. Keep this in mind before you discharge a taser at someone.

6) Leave the front end of your taser alone. Once the cartridge is loaded keep your hands away from it.

7) Replace the batteries if your taser is showing a low signal. If it's not working properly it won't be much good to you.

8) Never fire your taser at someone closer than 3 feet. Get back to a distance of 7-10 feet before using it.

9) The taser is designed to shoot from a level and upright position ( the weapon - not you) so if you want it to work, hold it properly.

10) Find a safe place to get used to handling your taser and if it has the laser sighting- which most of them do, get used to aiming it. Purchasing an extra cartridge to practice firing is an option you might want to consider.

11) If you ever need to use your taser on a person, aim for the center of the chest. It is the largest area of the body and you're less likely to miss.

12) After firing your taser, put put it down and leave the scene. Tasers discharge special identification tags that are traceable by police and there is a chance that your taser will be recovered and if not the company will replace it under the right circumstances. But you're not replaceable - so go.
