Assorted Tips On Organic Gardening

By Abel MacLaren

Many people do organic gardening as a relaxing hobby. It gives a sense of well being when they achieve a colorful show of flowers and plants. Some people go further than that, and grow their own food.

The interest in organic gardening has grown over the years. Although organically grown food can be found in supernarkets, many still prefer to produce their own. There is a special satisfaction in growing something that way, and knowing exactly how it was produced.

Any use of things like herbicides, chemical fertilizers etc. is a no-no when doing organic gardening. Do you get pest problems? Sure, it happens - but you can handle those wthout resorting to chemicals.

After all, it's what previous generations had to do and they didn't starve. You just need a bit of cunning. One trick to get rid of those annoying aphids is to plant marigolds near to your vegetable patch. Let nature do its thing!

Many people are concerned about all the chemicals used in agriculture. Some of them may find their way into the food we eat, too. Organic gardening means you and your family don't need to worry about such problems.

When doing organic gardening, you will get introduced to the fascinating subject of how to make compost. This is much more wholesome than the bag of chemical fertilizer. And it is really easy, too, once you get the hang of it.

Indeed, a compost will swallow all that waste material from your garden, and some from the kitchen also. For instance, potato peels and such. And coffee grounds will fit in nicely.

Some more tips: - Make your own mulch by mixing pine needles with grass clippings... and use a mixture of cooking oil and liquid soap, plus water, to spray those pesky aphids.

Organic gardening, even if you only have a tiny patch of land, enables you to have a natural relationship with the cycle of nature and the production of food, rather than just going to the supermarket to get it. Most of us never stop to think where it comes from and if there's a better way.
