Career Crisis: It's Not the End of the World

No one likes to think about the possibility of losing their job, but the reality of life is that layoffs do happen. A little preparation combined with some mental reinforcement can make this transition in life a little easier and possibly more rewarding.

One problem with job layoffs is that the market tends to be flooded with other, maybe from your same company, who are looking for similar jobs. They may have the same skill set as you, making the competition intense.

There are steps you can take to lessen the pain of unemployment and make your job search more productive. Let's take a look at some of the steps you can take, everything from polishing your resume, to clearing your head of negative thinking.

Sometimes we don't have warning that a layoff may take place. There may be signs like fewer customers, more time in your day, fewer supplies being ordered, and the list goes on. But until it happens no one can know for sure that troubled times will translate into layoffs.

Sometimes there are other indicators that the office or factory is on a downward spiral. Behavior changes in management is one example. Managers can turn to micro managing in an attempt to gain more control over their situation. Sometimes they turn to micro managing just to appear to be busy and needed, in an attempt to ward off their own potential layoff.

As soon as you have that first warning signal it's a good idea to gets your facts straight. This means pulling out your old resume and updating it. You may want to re-write the entire resume, giving it a freshness and new perspective. Remember to include qualities as well such as your punctual attendance and your willingness to go the extra mile.

Remember to focus some attention on your thinking and beliefs. There are many tools and methods that you can learn that will help you deal with the stress of a layoff. Anything you can do to empower yourself will serve you in your job search and interviewing process. It is possible to take the unfortunate layoff experience and turn it into an opportunity for self improvement or even a career shift.
