Expand Your Vocal Range

By Elizabeth Schohl

Every singer has a special range where they can sing the best. If you try to sing up in the higher range, you will know that your voice will not sound as lush or intense because it will tend to sound like a falsetto. If you can hum in a certain range, you will note that if your mouth is closed humming your singing will be the same with no falsetto voice.

Only your favorite singer can sound exactly like themselves as no one can copy their trademark sound exactly. Keep in mind that you can practice and spend time to sound like them or get the same range, but your own voice is your sound. Learn how to work with your voice and cultivate your distinctive sound which people will learn to know.

Keep in mind that if you must extend your voice range, you need to get some practice time at a regular basis. Most people don't like to practice much, but they want to sound good right away without the hard work that it takes. Many expert singers take the time to work on their voice so that you know that they are much better than others.

You can stretch your vocal range by practicing how to speak with an awareness that your are changing your voice with each word. Most people find that when they are upset or excited their voice gets very high and thin pitched, and when they experience a cold the voice has a much lower sound than normal. Well, you can practice the same technique with your voice by expanding the range of pitches.

Try experimenting reading aloud a childrens story using a lot of expression with your voice because at times it can reach a range in your voice that can surpass your singing range. You are training your voice to reach higher pitches without breaking and then you are relaxing your vocal cords when you sing lower pitches. The vocal cords do fall in comfortably what that are used to singing, except when you reach a higher range they begin to separate and the falsetto voice begins.

Teach your vocal cords to relax when you want to go higher so they will comfortably reach that range. Talking and expressing yourself is the best way to teach your vocal cords what you want them to do. After that you will be able to sing higher without straining your voice.

Singers must not try to sing beyond their range as the stress and harm on the vocal cords will be bad. The voice may not heal if there is repeated stress on the cords. Repetitive shouting and screaming will weaken the vocal cords tremendously, as we need our voices for communicating with each other.

If you practice properly you'll find that your vocal cords will begin to react to your requests. You'll hear a difference when you try to hit the higher notes which aren't really that high. Your vocal cords have adjusted to being loosened to allow you comfortably reach those higher notes.
