Beginning on January 5, 2009, uninsured Florida residents wll be able to buy health insurance under the Cover Florida program. The bill that Governor Charlie Christ signed in May of 2008 offers a stripped down group of plans that are exempt from some state regulations.
While the coverage will not be perfect, it is a movement in the right direction. In addition to the fact that the plans won't cover some state mandated regulations, they also may limit other services such as hospital stays. The Governor's primary goal in providing these plans was to get lower premiums.
It has been reported that there are six insurers who've signed on and agreed to provide 25 different plans to the citizens, and that the average plan premium will be approximately $155 per month. Christ stated that the plan was all about helping people and giving them freedom and choices regarding their health care, where they didn't have it before.
This is a positive step in the right direction for many, even though the deductibles in the plan will approach $3000 for a family plan. The plan is a step toward a focus on health care instead of sickness care.
Over 3 million Floridians who would not be able to get coverage otherwise will now have an opportunity under the Cover Florida Health Care Program. All residents who have not been covered in the prior six months, and who are between 19 and 64 will be eligible, with pre-existing conditions not being a deterrent to acceptance to the plan.
