Traversing Open Waters With An Inflatable Kayak

By Chris Channing

In earlier times, inflatable kayaks were not always respected among die hard kayak fans, simply because they didn't compare to the superior benefits of a hard shell kayak. But with today's technology, the inflatable kayak has become a very real challenger with benefits the hard shell kayak clearly doesn't have.

It's very interesting to see that an inflatable kayak is actually just as hard as a kayak made from hard materials. This will depend on the manufacturer, but the general consensus is that a high-end inflatable kayak has the same rigid body a kayak of a generally harder material has- giving it extra durability and weight for tougher conditions.

Of course the reason why most opt for an inflatable kayak is the fact that they are so easily stored and easily used. Whereas most kayaks would have to be stored on top of a vehicle or even towed, inflatable kayaks can fit comfortably in a trunk or backseat, and are up and going in just minutes. It's hard to compete with such versatility in an on the go lifestyle this decade maintains.

If one is just starting out in learning how to properly operate a kayak, they should opt for an inflatable version. Most kayak retail stores and rental stores will have them, and as they will confirm, inflatable kayaks are best for beginners. This due to the fact it is easier to paddle and also easier to maintain a stable sense of balance while going down mild whitewater rapids. This doesn't mean experts won't enjoy them, because they will get the same experience without any negative benefit.

As we can tell so far in the reasons listed for the inflatable kayak being superior, it seems versatility has shown that the inflatable kayak is here to stay. This is only bolstered by the fact that an inflatable kayak can go virtually anywhere- and sometimes is even a better choice in some types of waters. From rapids to open waters, an inflatable kayak is just as safe as it is functional.

Those who are devoid of time will, as a last benefit, appreciate the fact that the inflatable kayak will not require much maintenance. This is compared to hard shell kayaks, which require shelter from the elements- and they take up quite a bit of space which can be a problem. Hard shell kayaks also are susceptible to degradation that some inflatable kayaks are resistant to.

Final Thoughts

Inflatable kayaks are so versatile that all they really require is a body of water and a nearby retailer- meaning they can truly be enjoyed in all sorts of environments. In addition, they are fairly cheap and are easy to obtain via the Internet, where all types of models exist to suit any needs.
