Alaska Home Owners Insurance -- How To Make Big Savings

By Chimezirim Odimba

A cheap rate can be achieved in many ways. But at the same time, a number of methods people employ in order to reduce cost actually make them get less than adequate coverage. I do NOT naturally recommend such options because they make nonsense of the main purpose of a Alaska home owner insurance policy in the first place. Bearing this in mind, I'll only give you tips that will also leave you adequately covered despite saving you much. Here they are...

1.Your credit history will make you spend more or less. You'll attract higher Alaska homeowners' insurance rates if you have a poor credit rating. A poor credit rating implies that you've not been paying your bills promptly. No insurer is happy with this as it suggests a pattern you're quite likely to repeat in the payment of premiums. This makes you more risky to them and yourself, therefore, are made to spend higher than someone else with the same profile that has an excellent rating.

It will, therefore, be a smart step to do something about improving your credit rating. You will attract lower rates if you do.

2.Government home insurance policies could really be costing you more than what you can now get with private insurers. It used to be quite difficult to get insurance providers if you reside in certain high crime areas or places that were affected by certain natural disasters. Some people in those regions had just an option: Government homeowner's insurance sold by a government agency. The case is really different now as private insurers are beginning to cater for such places.

Some may still have little or no other means of getting home insurance coverage apart from a government homeowner's insurance. But if your area is now covered by some private insurers you might save a lot more by buying from them.

3.Smoking increases the risk of a fire in your house. And statistics have it that over 23,000 residential fire every year could be traced to smoking. You'll pay less on your Alaska home insurance policy if nobody in your household smokes. For people who smoke, note that you're eligible for a downward review in your rate once you've quit smoking for over twelve months. What if your insurer refuses to grant you discounts because some companies do NOT give non-smokers discounts? Then it's time to shop for an insurer who does unless you have something else to make your continued stay with such an insurer worthwhile.

4.Fit your home with shatter-proof windows and you will attract cheaper rates. If you stay in locations with high winds and hail storms get your windows upgraded to these and you'll get considerable discounts. Always remember to discuss with your agent whenever you take such a step. You can also discuss with your agent first before undertaking the changes as he or she would be in a better position to advise you on how to save the most.

5.There are exclusions in your home insurance policy. Have you taken note of them? Be well informed that you won't get compensated for anything that is excluded from your policy.

Therefore, before you settle for a low-priced rate make sure it does not exclude something that is important to you. Any home insurance policy that puts you at risk isn't truly worth the paper it's written on no matter how cheap it is. All it demands is studying the policy to avoid unpleasant surprises down the road.

6. The most important key to considerable savings in Alaska home owners' insurance is comparison shopping -- That's if you do it right. You can get quotes that will have a difference that exceeds $1,000. You could easily save so much by just going with the lowest quote. That should apply if you're just after the lowest price. However, if you want the best price/value then you'd have to check the details of the lowest quotes. Different insurance companies may have adjustments for similar policies. It's a good idea to ask the agent what's included and what's excluded.
