Children's Safety In Current Times

By Carol Ann

As parents, we are all aware of the myriad of dangers that can befall our children. Keeping your children safe is one of your primary responsibilities, and may be your most important job. It is also possibly the most difficult to accomplish. No matter what you do, your children are going to be exposed to world and will thus be susceptible to the experiences that they encounter.

Recently there have been several documented situations that have been bad for children. One particular story is about a nine year old girl swinging on a swingset with her best friend. In this situation, as the child was swinging, the swingset came off the ground and hit the child and killed her. It was not a situation which could have been predicted, but nonethelsss, it should send a message to all parents that disasters can happen at any turn with no warning.

In this day and age, cell phones should be given to children so they can call for help in case of emergencies. In a recent news story, a father and his two children were suddenly stuck in the snow. The father chose to stay with the car and directed the 11 & 14 year olds to walk 1 1/2 miles to their mother's home. The 11 year old girl froze to death along the way. This example is indicative of why children should have cell phones at their disposal for emergencies.

Another recent situation involved a young boy playing soccer. He was 12 years old and was the goal keeper during his game. In the middle of the game, all the action seemed to be on the opposite end of the field and he jumped up onto the goal post and pulled it down onto himself and was killed instantly. This is a situation that warrants parents to ask questions about the safety of school sports equipment.

All of these stories offer lessons that can be learned from. Parents everywhere need to always be aware of pitfalls and obstacles that can befall their children. It is tough, but awareness helps make the situation better.
