Christmas Fact That May Shock You " Free Christmas Coloring Pages

Are you one of those rare individuals who think out side of the box? If so then chances are you have probably wondered about Christmas. What was it like? How did it come about? Whos bright idea was it anyway?

I wish that I could share the entire history of Christmas with you from beginning to end right now. In order to do that I would need to write a book. I will however give you some facts that will knock your socks off, or at the very least surprise you.

The Christmas fact that I am going to share with you in this article began back in the early 17th century. There was a wave of religious transformation going on. This was the point in history when Christmas would forever be changed in Europe. This all took place when a guy by the name of Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan forces took over England in 1645. Once Oliver Cromwell was in control they vowed to rid England of decadence and, as part of their effort, Christmas was canceled.

America would be forever changed when a group of pilgrims, English separatists landed in 1620. These groups of people were even more orthodox in their puritan beliefs than Cromwell. Needless to say Christmas was not the jovial holiday that was celebrated in the early days of America. In fact from 1659 to 1681, the act of celebrating Christmas was actually illegal in Boston. The powers that be had mad it illegal for any one to celebrate Christmas. The holiday was actually illegal in Boston. If caught celebrating you were fined five shillings.

I dont know about you, but I find it rather difficult to even imagine going without celebrating Christmas. Think about it What if congress passed a bill to make it illegal for you to celebrate Christmas? Would you do it anyway? Or would you take a chance and suffer the consequences?

So I have digressed Allow me to continue. After the American Revolution when English customs began to fall out of favor, this included Christmas. Get this " Congress was actually in session on December 25, 1789, which was the first Christmas under Americas new constitution. Christmas wasnt declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.
