The Chevy Monte Carlo had many years of sporty cars before the LT was introduced to the consumers. The Monte carlo goes back several decades and started out in the era of muscle cars. The Monte Carlo design was started as a big-block V8 to enitice customers. The Monte Carlo Super Sport was introduced. Then the car was scaled to be a more luxory type vehicle also was down sized for more optimal fuel efficiency.
Until 1988 was considered a popular rear-drive sports coupe. At this time it was replaced by the Lumina coupe. After many years the Monte Carlo again came back on the scene in 1995. This model was softened, long gone was the muscle car V8's now the sported the V6 engine. They also had a carry-over platform that was front wheel drive. The V6 engines didn't have a trace of the performance of the long gone V8.
In 2000, the Monte Carlo introduced more distinctive styling and updated chassis and body to meet the needs of the consumers. It was in 2006 that the Monte carlo made its way back to a more sportier chassis,more power in the Super Sport models, and improved driving dynamics. The interior as well as the exterioe was given a fresh new look offering a sculpted, more contempory look.
But even with these updates, sales were slow, so the Monte Carlo disappeared again in after the 2007 model. The Monte Carlo was improved in more recent years and again returning to the V8 in some models and the Super Sport package was once again offered. The Monte Carlo after major updates remains a mid-size 2 door coupe. It is available in three different trim packages.
The LS was the basic although well equipped model. Then there was the LT, it is a more up-scaled model and last but not least the SS model with high performance. The LS and the LT model came equipped under the hood with a 3.5 liter V6, Boasting 211 horsepower.
The SS model has a 5.3 liter V8 carrying 303 horsepower. Yes this is an impressive number. Although in today's economy not the best choice.Many people have said it would have been to their increased popularity, as in past years, to offer rear wheel drive in the Monte Carlo.
Whether you chose the LS, LT,or SS model , it was a spacious sports coupe. It also offered good performance and over-all comfort in return for a relatively low sticker price. It is a shame that this classic car has not been able to compete with other models in today's market.
