PDA or GPS - Pharos Traveler GPS 525

By Matt Ryan

Pharos has introduced their new GPS 525. This GPS offers more functionality, to consumers, than just simple GPS tracking features. The compact design makes this system easy to travel with and is unobtrusive in your car. Minimal buttons, on the system, makes the unit easy to navigate and learn.

The Pharos Travel GPS 525 comes, ready to use, right out-of-the-box. With the purchase of this system, you automatically receive a PTL525 receiver, windshield bracket mount, AC adapter, 12-volt car charger, USB SD card reader, headset, 512 MB SD card, navigation CD with U.S. maps, and user's manual.

In addition, the integration of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 gives users a GPS system that does more than give you directions. Because of the integration of Windows Mobile, users now have the ability to use applications, such as Word, Outlook, and Excel, from one unit. From your Pharos Traveler GPS 525, you can now synchronize with your system, with your Outlook contacts. Navigation and GPS positioning has never been easier.

Under the hood you have an SC32442X 300MHz process, 64MB ROM, and 128MB SDRAM, which gives users a stable foundation for great performance. Due to the file size of the preloaded maps, Pharos added a memory card - 512 MD SD - to allow for more storage, giving you the ability to add more storage as needed. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies meet the standards of today with 802.11b and 64-128 WEP data encryption.

Preloaded maps are a grand benefit to consumers, but the points-of-interests, available through the GPS' mapping software, can be much more useful. Finding your favorite restaurant or bank has never been easier. With a couple clicks, or the use of your stylus pen, points-of-interest are easily accessible.

Pharos designed the Traveler GPS 525 to be concealed - easily - in a purse, briefcase, laptop back, or even a pocket. The unit only weights 4.4 ounces and measures around 2.34 x 4.32 x 0.69 inches. Not only is the GPS 525 easy to travel with, but the integration of VoIP technology allows you to make free calls as well. This is yet another functionality - that many GPS systems do not have - and that make this GPS system comparable to cell phones.

With all of this functionality, it is no surprise that the GPS 525 is not sold at a low sticker price. This unit typically sells for around $600; the same price that higher end PDAs are being sold for.

The display - 240 x 320 resolutions with 64,000 colors - tends to be a bit difficult to view when it is being used while driving. Additionally, this unit can accidentally be turned on or off if it is not stored in its proper traveling case, as there is no lock button like the ones found on most touch screen phones.

In spite of the hefty sticker price, the GPS 525 provides users with a multitude of functionalities, all in one unit. Even though this unit is slightly higher priced than many PDAs, it does offer a sleek, compact design that many PDAs do not. Using the GPS 525, while driving, may prove to be difficult. Automatically loading all of the maps available, may cause you to purchase additional memory cards.

There are obvious quirks, small screen size, and the need for additional memory. This unit was designed for travelers, to make their lives easier, and can do just that.
