What's Popping in Iowa

By Qandishah Brown

If you are in Iowa then one thing that you will discover is that corn isn't all that ordinary. Aside from the fact that this state is a major producer of this crop you will find that corn is taken seriously over here. It's amazing what they have been able to do with that simple thing that we don't really think about. Corn goes beyond being eaten in Iowa; all the possibilities to ensure its use are exhausted.

This crop which we love so much whether it's buttered on the cob or popped while we're watching our favorite flick starts out as just a kernel. Broken down there are four main components which you will get from your corn kernel. These are: starch, protein, fiber and oil. Visit your local supermarket and you will find that thousands of products are listed to have some type of corn component. Not only food products depend on corn.

Among the many uses of corn aside from being food is being a component for other products. You will find that it can be used to run your car or an engine. Ethanol can be produced from corn and used to run engines. The same ethanol can also be use in the production of carbonated drinks and dry ice. Who would have thought all this could come from corn. Even the chicken that we eat is raised on corn grains.

Who knows what else corn can do, or what other uses it has. It can go into the production of textiles, rubber tires, cosmetics and even plastics. Now we know why those in Iowa take their corn so seriously. There is so much profit to be made from it with all the things that you can do with it.

Surely if you visit an Iowa craft fair or show you will find something that is made from corn. Be it milled flour or some delicious homemade corn muffins. If you have a way with crafts then you may want to try and join the craft fairs as well, even if your products aren't from corn. It will be a good opportunity to make some serious money.
