Financial Assistance for Tubal Reversal From Insurance Companies

By Sandra Wilson

You have now decided that you want to go ahead with tubal reversal surgery, but the biggest thing you will be faced with once you have made this decision is how you are going to pay for it. The best thing to do then is to start investigating what kind of financial assistance for tubal reversal there is and which you qualify for.

Finding some financial assistance will usually start with looking at your own health insurance to see if it will cover some or even all of the costs, if you are lucky. This can take some looking on your part. That will start with looking through your insurance policy at surgical procedures and the testing required before surgery to see what exclusions are made.

Unfortunately, many insurance companies consider tubal ligation reversal to be elective surgery. Whereas the original surgery may have been covered, to undo it is considered something you are simply choosing to do for non-medical reasons. That makes it a procedure they don't want to cover.

Once you have looked through your health insurance company's policy, you may luck out and discover that certain aspects of the procedure will be covered. Such things as the tests carried out prior to the surgery and the anesthesia during the surgery might just be covered.

Although it really is a good idea that you know what is in your insurance company's documentation, to be sure that things haven't changed, you might want to get the story straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Call the doctor's office and get all the codes that would be assigned to the procedure. You want all the diagnostic codes as well. You should get everything that would be billed to an insurance company. Give these to your insurance company and find out for sure what they will cover and what they will not cover.

Finding out you are fortunate enough to have an insurance that might cover this tubal ligation reversal surgery is good. Keep in mind that there may still be other factors that weigh in on whether you will get coverage or not.

Knowing whether or not you will have the procedure done in the state where you live is something some insurance companies will want to know. Insurance companies have to meet certain legal requirements and fertility procedures could come under these requirements. But just because tubal reversal could be considered a fertility procedure by you still does not mean it is necessarily covered by your insurance company.

The other point to note if you choose to use the services of an insurance company to provide you with financial assistance for tubal reversal is they may not always provide the money for the procedure immediately. Rather they may decide to pay out only after the operation has been completed and after you have had follow up appointments with your surgeon. Therefore you may need to get written confirmation from the company before the surgeon will proceed with the operation.
