Are the calorie counts on cardio machines accurate?
Kath: I rarely take note of the calorie burns on the machines so I'm not quite sure of the exact numbers compared to my heart rate monitor. After 30 minutes on the Stairmaster I am usually at about 275 kcal burned and I think I've seen the monitor report numbers like 350-400, so it's pretty far off. The machines tend to overestimate a lot, sorry to bring bad news! Calories burned on the machines is entirely based on the type of machine (such as arms or no arms) and the resistance you have.Micro Fence is a lot more than just an edge-guide. How much equipment do I need?
If you are planning a small facility (100-200 potential users), you will need at least 2 different types of major cardio machines: treadmill, bike, elliptical or stair climber. You will also need to cover the major muscle groups with strength training exercises.

First of all, what is meant by "high impact" and "low impact"?
Basically, any time one foot is in contact with the ground it is low impact. When you are in flight, meaning both feet are in the air, it is high. For example, even in a step class with the steps stacked very high, if one foot is in contact with the ground until the other foot touches the top step and then the back foot is raised, it is a low-impact event. However, if the instructor has the students jumping or even running in a circle around the room, it is high-impact.Basically, any time one foot is in contact with the ground it is low impact.
