Need More Storage Space?

By Mike Roberts

For some of us things have changed quite a bit in the last couple of years. The value of our homes have fallen dramatically and for many of us planning to move up into a larger home this has caused more than a few problems. If you live in California as I do, there are very few buyers and lots of sellers. You can find great deals, but what can you do with your current home since you probably won't get it sold.

If your family is like mine you might require some more storage space in your home. Unless you add on and doing a major remodel, which can't make too much sense given the condition of the housing market and the economy, we decided to install organizers in our closets. This would give us more storage space in each closet by about 50%. We had already installed them in two of our bedrooms, now we would install them in the other two bedrooms.

We devised a plan that would help with our lack of storage space. What I did was to install closet organizers in our other 2 bedrooms. This has the effect of increasing our closet storage as if we had built an extra closet, as most organizers increase closet space by up to 50%. As luck would have it this didn't completely solve our dilemma.

I'm absolutely sure that many others have the exact same problem my family had when we can only fit a single car in our 2 car garage. The Garage desperately needed organization and we knew we must throw away everything we really didn't want or use. Then we could start taking things from the interior and put them in the garage.

Our scheme was to transform the interior of our garage by placing storage cabinets along the walls and adding a workbench. Included in or plan was to utilize a portion of the garage wall to hang over sized items such as bikes from hooks. We also needed to move our lawn equipment to an outside storage shed we had constructed. This allowed us much more floor space in the garage.

We hung pre-fabricated wall cabinets and storage racks on around 70 percent of the usable wall space. On the remaining space we hung wall panels that utilized a hook and track system so that you can hang items on the wall. This is perfect for bicycles so it frees up floor space.

The most difficult and critical element of a project is the planning. If you are to effectively and efficiently execute organizing your garage you must first plan it correctly. This is the most critical and difficult part. By executing this the right way you will insure that your work will give you a perfectly organized garage. Hanging the cabinets, shelving and installing the wall panels will be the easiest part of the job.

If you put in some effort, a little time and some money, you most likely can solve your storage problems. You can organize the interior of your house and after that get your garage organized. Or you can do it the other way around. No matter in which order you do it it will give you more space than you possibly could have ever imagined. Storage issues can be problematic for many families. Solving our storage problems will give us more time to wait out the current financial situation and take advantage at the appropriate time to buy a bigger house.

If you are experiencing a problem with storage space you can take care of it quickly and easily by doing it yourself. It's surprisingly easy to do, won't take forever and is even fun to do.
