SEO Rules on Keyword Positioning in Your Site

By Irmin J. Roybal

This article is on SEO " Search Engine Optimization, an important component in achievement of online success. Here I am going to describe major rules on placement of key phrases and keywords in the website in a way, which gives better rating from search engines. Other issues, such as main mistakes made in attempt to cheat web crawlers or site indexing tips I have described elsewhere. Before start, I must give one general and very important note: never use SEO as your only source of web traffic. This places your site on a mercy of web robots, and robots know no mercy.

Main rule of keyword posting: the higher keyword or key phrase placed in the page, the higher weighting it will get by search engine.

Formatting: Emphasized text gets higher attention of the spiders. So, you can use the following:

- use key phrases in headings (especially those marked with h1 and h2 tags);

- post keywords (phrases) in bold, but dont use it too often, 2-3 reasonably marked lines or words should be enough;

- use italics (same comment).

Page Title: is the highest in SE rating string. Therefore, it is good if it carries the main keywords and/or key phrase. For the same time this is title, not a keyword list, so it should be original and on the subject. Also, the title must be reasonably brief: robot will not read further than 50 " 80 first characters.

Description: Site description is a meta-tag which does not influence the site rate directly. However, this is what the engine will show in search results, so you better make it catchy and informative, otherwise your link might be just skipped by the user.

Links: In all links (internal and external) try to use keywords and phrases, this will give a bit of extra weight to the site. Moderation is a special virtue here. Making link as just "click here" will not do much to you. For the same time excessively wordy linking might just irritate your visitor and make him leave your site.

Pages: Content is very important, so the more pages your site has and the more often new pages are added, the better will be site rating. Keywords (or key phrases) are working better for your site rating when they are distributed as one per page. Placing 2 or 3 similar phrases per page is OK, but if there will be more, the effect will be reduced. Among all pages index page is the most weighted one, it has the higher chance to appear on top of search results and therefore, making right choice of leading keyword(s) in index page is important.

Have a great SEO!
