Alcoholism and Drug Addiction - Preconceptions that Can Hurt You

By C-P Lehmann

I have mentioned this often previously - before healing or progress can be made when fighting an illness like drug addiction or alcoholism, is knowing and understanding what you're up against.

The reason I say this, is because understanding allows you to rid yourself of any preconceived ideas you may have, which are what keep you fixed in a certain way of thinking and thereby prevent you from making progress.

Being inflexible and having preconceived notions on a particular area (in this case alcoholism or drug addiction) - means we end up being our worst enemies in our fight against addiction.

So step number one needs to be you getting out of your own way, getting the information/knowledge you need - and then moving forward from there to start your journey of healing and recovery.

Being right is a need many of us struggle with - and open-mindedness and flexibility of thought just don't come naturally. That can be a good thing at times. But not when it comes to addiction-related illnesses where a life could be at stake.

When it comes to understanding the nature of alcoholism and drug addiction, a particularly contentious issue is the addiction/alcoholism as a disease argument. At the end of the day, whether or not you agree with this line of reasoning, should make little difference to you doing everything you can to fight your own or help someone else fight their addiction.

Another potentially controversial topic is discussing the causes of drug addiction and alcoholism. Genetic and hereditary factors are increasingly being scientific proven to play significant roles, but many still refuse to accept the fact.

For more in-depth information around these subjects, follow the links in the resource box provided. But my point is - ultimately these issues should be secondary to doing whatever is necessary to get clean and sober.
